to Trudi Peters about Endometriosis, the disease that
effects 1000’s of South African women.
**** Endometriosis In a nutshell – “What is Endometriosis?”
Endometriosis is a common gynaecological condition. It was
described in medical literature more than 300 years ago and
has since been recognized as a chronic, painful, and often
progressive disease in women. It occurs when cells from the
mucus membrane lining the uterus (endometrium) form implants
that attach, grow, and function outside the uterus,
generally in the pelvic region. Because these cells are
endometrial cells they are activated by hormonal activity
and function accordingly, swelling and bleeding during
menstruation. The causes of endometriosis are unknown.
Endometriosis Statistics
- One of the top three causes of female infertility.
- More than 5.5 million women in the US are affected,
and between 1.5 and 2 million women in the UK.
Unfortunately no South African statistics are available.
- 30% to 40% of women with endometriosis are
infertile.
- Many infertile women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s with
endometriosis have debilitating, painful periods.
According to a survey conducted by the national
Endometriosis Society in the UK (2001): To determine
whether endometriosis had ever affected women’s
employment: Some 65% said yes; 30% had not been able
to keep the same job; and 16% had stopped working. The
cost to the economy has yet to be calculated but must
run into millions of pounds. (Source)
I have treated many women with endometriosis and had
incredible results. Some of those women were battling to
conceive as a result of endometriosis, and others had
the disease and were desperate to manage it better. In
every case Reflexology has proved to be an invaluable
therapy - the women I treated either fell pregnant or
their endometriosis became more manageable.
In my personal and professional experience of dealing
with Endometriosis, I have come to realize that the most
effective treatment for this disease is a holistic
treatment program. I am fortunate enough to have a
fantastic network of practitioners and experts in their
respective field of healthcare, who are dedicated to the
treatment of Endometriosis. When we combine our
expertise the result is a phenomenal, holistic,
endometriosis treatment team. Our team consists of a
specialist gynaecologist, a homeopath, an acupuncturist,
a dietician, a clinical psychologist and me - the
reflexologist!
